Project Overview
The Victorian Almshouse Redevelopment at James Memorial Homes demonstrates how heritage buildings can be sensitively adapted to meet modern housing needs. KKE Architects delivered ten new apartments alongside improved communal facilities, creating accessible, high-quality accommodation while preserving key elements of the site’s historic Victorian character.
The scheme replaced outdated communal facilities, enabling additional accommodation while improving the overall layout, accessibility and functionality of the development.
The original almshouses are arranged in three separate blocks around a landscaped courtyard featuring mature trees and established planting. Victorian buildings along Stuart Street formed the fourth side of the courtyard and historically accommodated communal facilities, although parts of the buildings had become underutilised over time.
Victorian Almshouse Redevelopment and Heritage Conservation
A key aspect of the project was the careful retention and integration of significant Victorian architectural features. The two principal elevations, including the original church entrance porch, were preserved and incorporated into the redevelopment.
Behind these retained façades, KKE Architects designed a contemporary residential building providing ten new apartments and communal accommodation. Covered external walkways, lift access and stair cores ensure safe and convenient movement throughout the development while maintaining strong visual connections with the historic setting.
Accessible Almshouse Living Environment
The new development occupies much of the footprint of the former communal buildings and introduces a range of supporting facilities, including:
- Ten new almshouse apartments
- Mobility scooter shelters
- Dedicated bin storage facilities
- Private ground-floor terraces
- Improved pedestrian pathways
- New planting beds and raised planters
- Garden pavilion and communal outdoor spaces
- Enhanced accessibility throughout the site
The landscape design creates an attractive and inclusive environment that encourages social interaction, wellbeing and outdoor enjoyment for residents.
