The brief was to create a family home in a former garden plot. The family wanted a light and airy house that was warm in the winter but which could open out into the garden when the weather was warm. Glazed doors now open out from a large kitchen dining area onto a semi-covered terrace leading onto a swimming pool, ideal for summer entertaining. A ground source heat pump provides underfloor heating and hot water.
This is complimented by super-insulating the house with 150mm full-fill cavity: twice as much insulation in the floor and roof structure than traditionally included. A rainwater harvesting system feeds the toilets, utility room and irrigation system for the garden. Part of the roof is sedum-planted to minimize the impact of flash floods and to offset the carbon footprint of the house.
